A Summer of Million-Dollar Cards: Ohtani, Wembanyama, Celebrini and More

The summer of 2026 turned into one of those stretches where the trading card world felt less like a hobby and more like a high-stakes auction house mixed with pure lottery luck. July and August delivered a string of sales that cleared a million dollars, some of them by a comfortable margin, and a few that made even longtime collectors stop scrolling and just stare at their phones.

It started building early in July. A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle graded PSA 8 changed hands for about $1.56 million. That card has been the hobby’s blue-chip stock for decades, and seeing another high-grade example still command that kind of money reminds you why the Yankees legend never really goes out of style. Around the same time, a Tom Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket autograph cleared $1.1 million. Brady’s cards have been million-dollar regulars for years, but it still feels wild every time one hits that mark.

Then Victor Wembanyama’s market flexed again. A 2024 Panini Revolution vertical green Kaboom! one-of-one, graded PSA 9, sold for roughly $1.44 million. Kaboom! cards have this comic-book energy that collectors either love or ignore, but when it’s a true 1/1 of a generational big man, the money shows up. It was the highest public Kaboom sale on record at the time and the second-biggest Wembanyama card overall.

Mid-month brought another Shohei Ohtani headline. His 2018 Bowman Chrome Superfractor batting variation, the one-of-one graded BGS 9.5, went for $3.365 million in a private deal. Ohtani’s cards had already been climbing hard, but this one felt like another step into the stratosphere. A few days later, a signed 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson rookie card—PSA 1 with a strong PSA/DNA 8 auto that sold for $1.86 million. That one carried real historical weight. There are only a handful of authenticated signed examples of that card, and it set records both for Jackie and for signed vintage baseball cards in general. Finding one in an old briefcase, like the story went, only made it more cinematic.

Then came the big one. Late July, a collector walking into a shop in Boca Raton pulled a 2026 Topps Chrome Shohei Ohtani Back-to-Back Dual Gold Logoman. Two gold MLB logo patches from his consecutive MVP seasons, dual autographs in English and kanji, one-of-one. Within days it sold privately for $11 million. That price put it third on the all-time sports card list behind only the Jordan/Kobe dual Logoman and the famous 1952 Mantle SGC 9.5. An active player’s modern card hitting that number still feels almost unreal. Ohtani has turned the ultra-modern market into something that can compete with the classic grails.

August didn’t slow down much. Early in the month a 2018 Panini National Treasures Josh Allen Rookie Patch Autograph with the NFL Shield, the true 1/1 graded PSA 8.5, sold privately for $1.7 million. That set a new record for any Allen card and put the Bills quarterback in rarer company with the likes of Brady and Mahomes when it comes to multiple seven-figure sales. A restored T206 Honus Wagner “Die-Cut” example brought in $1.33 million around the same time, proving that even cards with disclosed restoration can still pull serious money when the player is the Flying Dutchman.

Then hockey got its moment. A 2024-25 Upper Deck Young Guns Outburst Gold Macklin Celebrini one-of-one sold for $1.28 million. That’s the highest modern hockey card sale on record and trails only the true Gretzky rookies. Celebrini’s stock has been rising fast, and this card made the rest of the hockey collecting world sit up and take notice.

Looking at the whole stretch, a few patterns stand out. Superstars still rule, Ohtani, Wembanyama, Allen, Celebrini, but history holds its own, whether it’s Mantle, Robinson, or Wagner. One-of-ones and true rookies with the right pedigree keep driving the biggest numbers. And private sales and auction houses both played big roles; the money is there either way when the card is special enough.

I keep thinking about the guy in Boca Raton who opened that pack. One ordinary trip to the card shop, and suddenly he’s part of a story that will get told for years. That’s the crazy part of this hobby. Most of us are just chasing cool cards and maybe a little profit. Every once in a while, though, someone hits the absolute lottery, and the rest of us get to watch the numbers climb into territory that used to feel impossible. July and August 2026 gave us several of those moments, and the market doesn’t look ready to cool off anytime soon.

Check this card out on eBay at https://ebay.us/ObkO7q Picture this: Alejandro Kirk, the pint-sized powerhouse from Tijuana, Mexico, standing a defiant 5'8" and built like a Baja burrito, once had MLB scouts snickering at his stocky frame, dismissing him as too short to squat behind the dish. But in 2016, the Toronto Blue Jays dropped a measly $30,000 on this overlooked gem, and oh boy, did they hit the jackpot. His highs? A meteoric debut in 2020, where the 21-year-old rookie catcher slapped four hits, including his first homer, in a single game, then swiped his inaugural stolen base in 2025 like a sneaky raccoon at a picnic, defying his "zero speed" rep. All-Star nods twice over, a stingy 11.7% strikeout rate that makes pitchers weep, and elite framing skills that turn meatballs into strikes. The lows? Sure, a sluggi...
